450 rpm is way too fast for lots of horizontal mill work, although its OK for typical end mills used with a vertical mill. OK, a VFD, but then where is the torque? It is still a direct belt drive to the spindle, and belts slip. Back gears increase torque at the cutter also, while keeping the motor speed high and belt pull low. That avoids slippage.Web

I was going to suggest the Rockwell 21-122 Vertical/Horizontal Mill too. As to the Clausing, I've never heard of a Clausing that was a combination mill like the Rockwell. The 8520, 8525, 8530 and 8535 mills are small vertical mills and the 8540, 8541, 8550, and 8551 are horizontal mills. They share very little in common with the vertical versions.Web
